Blue Margarita

Have you ever tried a Blue Margarita? Swapping out orange liqueur for blue curaçao liqueur creates this unique electric blue variation on the classic margarita. While it looks very different from a traditional margarita, the flavor is surprisingly similar to the classic recipe.

Ingredients in a Blue Margarita

  • White Tequila – Choose any silver tequila.
  • Blue Curacao Liqueur – A blue liqueur with an orange flavor (this is why this recipe doesn’t call for Cointreau or Triple Sec).
  • Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed is highly recommended.
  • Cherries and Orange Slices – To garnish (optional).
  • Kosher Salt – For a salted rim (optional).

The best glassware to serve a spicy margarita in is a double old fashioned glass (or any short glass). The long necked margarita glasses are best for frozen margaritas, and for on the rocks margaritas I love to use short glasses.

How to Make Blue Margaritas

Begin by preparing the rim of your cocktail glass with salt. This is optional.

In a cocktail shaker with ice, add tequila, blue curacao liqueur and fresh lime juice.

Shake for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.

Strain and pour into your prepared glass with fresh ice.

Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.

Tips for Making

  • Frozen Blue Margarita – To turn this recipe into a frozen drink, simply blend with a handful of ice cubes instead of using a cocktail shaker.
  • Simple Syrup – This recipe doesn’t call for simple syrup (or agave syrup) because we found it to be sweet enough and well balanced without it. If you want a sweeter version, try adding half an ounce of simple syrup.
  • Garnish Ideas – Garnish this drink with a shark candy to make it a shark week drink. Garnish with an umbrella to turn it into a poolside cocktail. Garnish with an edible flower to make it the perfect summer patio drink.
