‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ Is Getting Another Season

The social experiment also known as Netflix’s The Ultimatum: Queer Love is returning to delight and torture the LGBTQ+ community once more.

On Thursday, Netflix announced that both the gay and the straight versions of the couple-swapping reality show would receive a new season. True to its title, the show brings together several sets of partners whose relationships are at a standstill because one person wants to get married and the other is on the fence. The couples agree to temporarily separate and enter into a “trial marriage” with another member of the cast, living in close quarters with them for three weeks.

This next season of The Ultimatum: Queer Love will bring us 10 new episodes set in Miami. There aren’t any details about the cast yet, other than the fact that all of the couples are “made up of women and nonbinary people.” (That’s a lot of words when they could’ve just said that the show is mostly about dyke drama, but that’s why I work at Themand not Netflix.) JoAnn Garcia Swisher is once again returning as the host of season two, despite the many memes posted on social media during the first season about her understanding (or lack thereof) of gay people.

The conceit of The Ultimatum is, obviously, completely off the rails. And the gay version of the show is an utterly excruciating watch, more so than the straight version. Don’t get me wrong, I love reality TV drama and I love when the girls are fighting. But as Them’s senior culture editor Samantha Allen noted last summer when the first season of The Ultimatum: Queer Love aired, marathon ~ processing ~ sessions don’t really make for the kind of juicy reality TV confrontations that end up going down in pop culture history. Usually, it’s just really depressing, and additionally has the side effect of producing the worst Twitter discourse in the world. And yet.

Netflix hasn’t announced an air date for season two of The Ultimatum: Queer Love yet, but I will absolutely be seated. In the meantime, the second season of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On (a.k.a. the heterosexual version) will be available on Netflix in a few months, with episodes 1-8 premiering August 23, and episodes 9 and 10 premiering on August 30.
